Overview – Weight Loss

Do you want to feel better?  Look better? Improve your overall health?  Prevent illness in the future?  Statistics show that losing weight by even by just 10% will have a significant positive impact on your health.

  • According to a report in Newsweek in June 1998, 55% of Americans are
    overweight.
  • Obesity-related disease, including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease (heart attacks and strokes), diabetes, and cancer, result in over 300,000 deaths annually.
  • Being overweight more than doubles the risk of developing arthritis.
If you are as little 10% overweight, you are at risk for developing these problems.
  • Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop has stated that being overweight is “the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States.”
America’s weight problem has cost the health care industry an estimated $70 billion annually.
  • It is important to reduce percent body fat while preserving lean body mass.  Most weight loss programs only focus on pounds lost, not permanent lifestyle change to support health and long-term success.

These are some of the reasons why it is so important to focus on weight loss and optimization as a crucial health maintenance and preventive strategy.
