How Can I Lose Weight Quickly?

Hi all,

This is going to sound stupid but I’m 13 and I want to lose weight for an abroad holiday in the summer. I am very self-conscious and sometimes thinks I have more fat on my stomach than I do, but I was just wondering if there is any way of losing weight quickly without starving myself, taking diet pills, etc.

Any answers would help.

Many thanks.
I forgot to add that I’m asthmatic and suffer from migraines so running isn’t an option I’d like to take.

Thanks.

You should limit your calorie intake per day. Take the amount you weigh and multiply it by 10. That is the amount of calories you should eat per day. Limit all carb intake. So no bread or pasta. No soda, try drinking only water because almost all drinks have a lot of calories in them including juice drinks. And exercise! Good luck :) . You’ll lose weight before you know it just by drinking only water.

If you lose weight quickly.. You’re going to gain it back quickly. Crash diets are not a good idea. I’m 19 now. When I was your age I went anorexic, and really stumped my growth. I’m 5’2 and 104lb now, size 0-2. I eat anything and everything I want. I shamelessly have bacon burgers at restaurants. There’s no secret to being a good size, it’s just as straightforward as everyone says-eat regular meals, portion control. Girls’ weights are going to fluctuate due to hormones, growing up, and menstrual cycles, it’s a fact of life you’ll have to face. Personally, I think those protein-only no-carb diets or extremely restricting diets are stupid. Humans are made to be omnivores, and we should eat as omnivores.

Personally, I don’t eat anything I don’t cook myself. Most food I eat is what I make at home. That means hardly any packaged food. It doesn’t matter if you’re on a 500 calorie diet, eating two bags of potato chips and calling it a day is not gonna help, your metabolism will curb itself in response to starving conditions, so you may even end up gaining weight by starving since your body is trying to hoard what calories it can. The more you eat the faster your metabolism in general. But it’s what you put in your body that matters as well. I never eat packaged foods, chips, cookies, snacks etc. Only home-cooked food! That means a lot of baked/boiled/sautéed food etc. Freshly prepared stuff won’t have as much salt or sugar or unusual substances like other foods. I bake cookies at home. Real butter over trans fats and hydrogenated oils that companies like Chips Ahoy and Keebler will make their treats with to save money! Avoid soft drinks. I only drink water, milk, and occasionally tea, which alone cuts out a lot of calories and excess sugar. Staying hydrated throughout the day is important as well – when you’re thirsty, drink WATER. Your body should be roughly 70% water. I cringe when I hear that people drink less than 3 cups of water a day. Don’t worry about fat-carb-protein ratio. Eat what you want, as long as it’s reasonable. By starving/depriving yourself, you’re only gonna do more damage later on when you DO binge.

I started losing weight when I began eating more frequently, and upping my calorie intake. I was bad about having breakfast. I started making instant oatmeal in the morning or having cereal, or a banana and yogurt when I was in a rush. I ate every time I was hungry, without paying attention to calories etc. Eat regularly, and don’t overwhelm yourself with restrictions, and the cravings go away. If you have a random craving, don’t feel guilty for a tiny treat, unless they’re too frequent. I also noticed that when I was cooking my own food, I was more conscious of what I was eating. You don’t have to cook yourself to eat well though. Take care of your body, and your body will take care of its own image. I eat a lot of pasta and TONS of starch (potatoes) which a lot of other people would say no to, but I’m smaller than those people! I’m sure roasted red potatoes with rotisserie chicken and macaroni and cheese is healthier than a tiny slab of meat and skipping meals. Doesn’t it sound tastier too? Eat a variety, don’t worry about counting. Your body will crave what it needs. Pay attention to what you need!

Make a few additional small changes – walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars.

Start a weight lifting routine. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can’t get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house. Invest in a good weight training book. The Dummies series actually has a good one.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate – in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don’t. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies.

Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day.

Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day.

Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body.
